Did anyone else keep up with or watch that game or hear about how crazy it was? With little or no time remaining, UVA-Wise returned a punt to score the game winning touchdown. The final score was 33-30 and up to that point, they trailed 30-27. It seems like they were ahead just one other time earlier during the game but that lead didn't last very long. It was a close back and forth battle, and I certainly didn't see the end result coming. Everyone was leaving the stands when it happened because there was about a minute left on the clock and Emory & Henry had just received the ball following a UVA-Wise interception. They thought it was all over, but they were wrong. It's the best game I've seen at UVA-Wise in person, and probably the best I'll ever see.

Glad to know someone else witnessed it! Good God, what a game. All I can say is I truly feel sorry for the folks who decided to sit at home and watch commercial-ladened NCAA football on TV. They missed out on an incredible game and atmosphere. Lots of kids from around the area playing for both teams, too. Gate City's Joseph Vaughn played for Emory & Henry, J.I. Burton's Martinez Miles played for UVA-Wise, and there were many other local stars out there as well.
Here's a great article about how it all went down from the UVA-Wise website:

Russell Hull from Clintwood had an interception as well, played a great game. Devan Sproles from JJK played for E&H and played great.

Wow, great play. Now a question, i saw on this play and at a game Friday night. Is there not a penalty for running into the kicker? Years ago it seemed like if you barely touched a kicker then a flag was dropped (either for roughing the kicker or running into the kicker), now it seems like they let a little more go.
I guess you didn't see the Haysi/PV game for the Regional Championship (I want to say in 93) where Blaine Hackney ran a punt back with no time to beat PV and win the Regions. It was basically the same situation. Everyone was leaving, thought it was over, and Haysi won.
Good to see Russell have a good game also. He's one of more than a dozen kids from a Clintwood from 7 that have went on to get a college offer who weren't as good as this years Union front 7.![]()
"There he goes, one of Gods own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die"
That play could be on Sportcenter's Top Plays.
But I also wonder why running into the kicker wasn't called and I believe an E&H fan thought the same thing and got pushed back by the ref's lol.
I wasn't at the game, but watching the video of the last play online it appeared to me that two defensive players made it into the backfield and one was stood up by the blockers while the other was partially blocked and fell at the punters feet. The punter landed on top of him. Its my understanding of the rules that it you are blocked into the punter/kicker there is no foul/penalty. That's what it looked like to me. Anyone else have a different opinion?
I read the newspaper account this morning and I'm sure the E&H coach was upset and it was the heat of the moment, but he seems to be a bad loser IMHO. He said he would not file a protest because "that would be crying and I'm not going to cry.", but he had no problem whining and crying to the papers instead.
Anyway, great win for the Cavs in what should be an annual rivalry IMO. This yearly meeting would be "The Event" of the region.
......and I thought truth was universal. Silly me......
